Six photographers will be selected for one-month residencies at Newspace Center for Photography. Each monthlong residency includes a $2,000 stipend, access to the Center’s darkroom, lighting studio, and digital lab facilities during our business hours. Residents will also be awarded a $500 in-house credit to be used towards digital printing costs.
We will be accepting applications beginning February 1st 2012 until the six residents have been selected and posted here on our website.
Portland Mayoral candidates Eileen Brady, Charlie Hales and Jefferson Smith will be joined by Portland City Council candidates Amanda Fritz, Mary Nolan and Steve Novick for a lively conversation about the arts in Portland, moderated by Portland Monthly Magazine Editor-in-Chief Randy Gragg.
Co-sponsored by the Creative Advocacy Network (CAN), the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC), the Portland Art Dealers Association (PADA), Business for Culture & the Arts (BCA), Portland Arts Alliance (PAA) and Oregon ArtPAC, this evening hosted by Portland Center Stage, Gerding Theater at the Armory, will give Portland's arts community the opportunity to get to know these candidates and better understand the impact that they could have on arts, culture and creativity in Portland over the next 4 years.

Sally Finch's solo exhibit, "Weather Studies" (Froelick Gallery, October, 2011), is reviewed in the January issue of 'Art in America'.
"Sally Finch presented the 23 abstract drawings and paintings (2009-2011) in her exhibition “Weather Studies” just as seasonal rains began to fall in the Northwest....Decades of precipitation and changing temperatures in Calcutta or Sendai took visual form in hand drawn grids as Finch transcribed monthly averages in tiny, penciled numerals and dots of acrylic paint...."

The delicacy of Robert Hanson’s sparsely rendered studies of seated female models belies their innate power. The drawings communicate a sense of humanity that seems simultaneously contemporary and timeless.
Tiny by contemporary standards, the drawings, usually less than 12 inches tall, are composed of carefully made lines and small marks that provide just enough critical information to make the figures seem perfectly complete.
APEX is an ongoing series of exhibitions showcasing Northwest-based artists, curated by Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson, The Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Curator of Northwest Art.
